A court victory for ex-Aveos workers

Former employees of Aveos are celebrating today.

Quebec Superior Court has ruled Air Canada broke federal law when it shut down the Aveos heavy-maintenance facility in Montreal last spring.

The court sided with the Quebec government, which contended the airline had an obligation to keep the maintenance work here in Montreal.

Former union rep Lyne Ste-Marie says today's decision is vindication for the 2600 Aveos employees who were tossed out of work last March.

"I'm sure everybody right now, all of the employees who ended up losing their jobs last March...I'm sure everyone that knows is celebrating right now," Ste-Marie says.

The airline, however, says it's planning to appeal.

A Pyrrhic victory. Though I detest how AC and ex-Nortel execs orchestrated Aveos' downfall, if the ruling holds, this may be the financial straw that breaks AC's back.
Air Canada is no longer a Crown Corporation but is now a private company hobbled by outdated and anti-competitive rules. Westjet execs must be overjoyed at this news.

AC retirees are already worried about the underfunding of their pensions. If this pushes the airline into financial collapse due to not being able to compete on a level playing field, there will be no Aveos, no AC, and no pensions. Thanks, Quebec, for appearing to support Quebec workers against a perceived federalist company. I'm sure that most Quebecers think that AC is still owned and operated by Les Federales.
