Examining toll scenarios for Montreal

The Montreal Metropolitan Community, which brings together mayors and representatives of 85 municipalities in and around Montreal, has asked a committee to look at some toll scenarios to fund major transport projects.

But one much-talked about option is not part of the study and that is tolls on bridges.

The study group is examining primarily two scenarios. The first one is a congestion tax for vehicles entering the centre of the city, similar to what is in place in London.

The second option is tolls on highways, where drivers would pay a fee depending on the number of kilometres they travel to enter the downtown core.

A member of the Montreal Metropolitan Community council says the scenario of bridge tolls may be added on.

According to La Presse, tolls on bridges was not included in the study because mayors of off-island communities have complained they would be unfair to their constituents as they would carry most of the burden.

The report is due out at the end of June.

Wonderful. So now people that do not want to pay the congestion tax, or Highway tolls will turn to Public Transit. Good thing we have that new Train de l'Ouest, and Blue Metro Line Extension that we can use instead...oh wait; they only exist on paper as well!!!
