The horrors of butt-dialing

Posted By: Canadian Press · 2/7/2013 1:54:00 PM

When a woman in Victoria, B.C. got a call from her daughter's cellphone and heard terrified screams, she immediately dialled 9-1-1.

It turned out the daughter was at a horror movie and had inadvertently called her mother.

But police say they were forced to check on the daughter to make sure she was okay.

Victoria 9-1-1 officials say this is just one of many examples of cellphone "pocket dialling'' and abandoned emergency calls.

They say since Jan. 1, emergency operators in the Victoria area have received 828 calls to 9-1-1 with no one on the other end of the line, but staff have to follow up on every call, something they say is a major drain on police resources.

Because teens are too stupid to lock keypads.

Keeping one's cell phone turned off is usually the better plan, until an actual need to call someone arises.
Besides that, people gabbing on cellphones incessantly is tiresome.

@pete How do you receive calls with your phone turned off, pete? You can't. Think before you speak.
