Florida defers law on International licence

Posted By: Jason Mayoff · 2/14/2013 2:21:00 PM

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says the law that threw Canadian snowbirds into a panic won't be enforced — at least not right away.

It's issued a statement saying the rules requiring such a permit may violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, and as a result, it will defer enforcement of of the rules requiring such a permit until a final determination can be made.

Many Quebec snowbirds say they just found out about the law this morning and were worried they would be in violation of the law, which applies to any non-resident, regardless of the vehicle they're driving — even if it's a rental.

Are the Americans for real? International drivers license when they don't even require identification for voting purposes?

What's worries me is that this PQ government will retaliate by passing its own license law which requires Americans to have an International Driver's License. There goes the only few American tourists to Quebec. Boy, I'd hate to be a Hotel owner then.....

I think this is a reasonable request as everything on a Quebec licence is in a foreign language. To compound the problem the birth month and days are reversed which may mean some people under 21 years of age could be served drinks when in fact they are under 21. There are 2 options pay a modest charge for international drivers licence or make the Quebec licence bilingual ( which we know will not happen) so the rest of North America can understand them.

It seems only right that the US should expect drivers in their country to provide a means of identifying the prof they can drive legally in their country. I don't see what all the fuss is about these licenses have been around for years. Other countries will also have to comply so i don't see the problem.

At least make the 'Plus' driver's license bilingual, after all, its main purpose is to allow easy entry into the US which means it will be read by an English American. Logic would demand that this type of a Quebec driver's license should be bilingual. N'est pas? I have one and it is currently only in French.

@Jerry it would seem logical to make it bilingual at least but the boneheads don't see this...they live in lala land and do not see reality.

I live in Florida. We have to put up to your rules when we visit Quebec so put up with ours. Eh?!

@Roslyn B If by "rules" you mean stupidity then yes I agree and we should pay the small price for our ignorance in order to drive in Florida. This is just one of the very many reasons why English (the language of the world) is so important. I just wish there was a way that Quebec wouldn't make any profit on people having to pay for these international permits.
