Maritime Plaza Hotel closes for good

A familiar structure at the corner of Guy St. and Rene-Levesque Blvd. is no longer operating as a hotel.

The Maritime Plaza Hotel, well known for its full-windowed circular shape, shut its doors for good on Monday, with management blaming an employee strike that began in August.

The union claims the workers were locked out.

Management says they plan on eventually opening a new, 200-unit condo development on the site, which would involve demolishing part of the existing structure.

    It is sad to see that during difficult economic times that unions have no regard for the reality of any situation and continue to make proposterous requests. I am all for equality and protection of th so called proletariate, however, unions will be at the root of many closures due to lack of financil backing. I think it is time that we restructure this archaeic system of unions into a streamlined one that involves the CNT (commission des normes de travai) and eliminate many levels of negociations between unions and corporations, and bring it back to the those working there.

    Unions are always out to make the employer seem indecent and discredit their negociations. However, more often than not the unions are foced to come back to their senses as the employers must always go to the extreme in order to have a decent negociation.

    This is why Montreal wil never catch up to Toronto we are too worried about protecting the nitty gritty that we let all the large opportunities pass us by. Economically, unions hurt morethan they help. Hence why our manfacturing industry has all but dissappeared.

    I know tha they are not the only reason, however, when they are in the background helping raise the fiscal that employers must pay out, then there is no financial reason for companies to want to come here.

    I blame the unions for this as they are making it more and more difficult for companies to be competitive in the global marketplace.

      @Karl You should have said:
      I blame the unions for this as they are making it more and more difficult for companies to make bigger profits to be competitive in the global marketplace by contracting out to china paying them $2.00 a day to make goods sold at Walmart at 100% profit
