MUHC gets more time to make cuts

The MUHC is getting a little more time to make some big budget cuts.

It was supposed to deliver its plan for a balanced budget today to the government and now has until the end of March.

In the meantime, unions are worried that job cuts are inevitable.

Paul Thomas represents non-medical staff at the MUHC. He says everyone is stressed about the future.

"Now what we heard directly from the administration is they are getting ready to cut positions," he says, "and that is going to be very bad."

The MUHC will not say how they intend to make the $53-million in cuts until their plan is final.

Thomas says they waited too long to deal with this deficit and now workers are taking the fall.

"They should be targetting the problem because right now they are not, and the population is going to be affected by these cuts."

The biggest problem with the MUHC is they're too top heavy! The old adage about "too many chiefs, not enough indians" certainly rings true here! They consistently refuse to cut their management positions, but instead choose to cut positions of already over-burdened support staff who will have to do even more with less. Another problem facing the MUHC is the way they monitor their expenses. Just look at the fact that construction material destined for the Royal Vic was diverted to Yanai Elbaz's palatial mansion in St. Laurent. Add to that the fact the former head of HR was falsifying invoices to claim expenses she wasn't entitled to. In my opinion, the people who should be paying the piper are the administrators, not the front-line people. Cutting front-line staff will ultimately impact services to patients, no matter how the MUHC spins it. The government should decree that the plan the MUHC submits must not contain reductions in staff.
