OQLF may backtrack again

Posted By: Laura Casella · 2/22/2013 12:30:00 PM

First it was pasta, now it's fish and chips.

The OQLF filed a complaint against the owner of the Brit and Chips on Cote de Neiges road for having among other things, fish and chips on his menu, and not poisson frit et frites.

But seems like the pasta, the language police are backtracking on this one too.

"We were told that if we would comply with their other requets, they would likely back down," owner Toby Lyle says.

But he still has not received any official word.

He says he will comply with other requests from the Office including changing the words "Ladies" and "Gents" on his bathroom doors. He will put pictures of Prince William and his wife, Kate instead.

Spokesperson for thw OQLF Martin Bergeron would not comment specifically on this case but says they are revising their laws to make sure that restaurants with "foreign specialities" are treated equally.

    I would love the federal government to step in and outlaw such criminal organizations as the OQLF. law my butt. It is a breach of the Canadian Charter of rights, for the OQLF and the Parti Quebecois to even exist.

    Look, the reality of all this misery and waste-of-tax-payer-dollars, is that ALL can easily be avoided. Here's how;

    ALL businesses must stand up and grow a pair. Don't be afraid or intimidated by these language cops! Go ahead! Post your signs! English, French, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Portugese, Spanish etc etc.

    For crying out loud people, the BEST form of protest, the best and strongest way to get these language gustapos to chillax is to just conduct your business as usual and keep posting your English signs.

    PQ invests millions into the OQLF? Well lets REALLY put these idiots to work!

    Stop being pushovers! Let them photograph your signs! Let them fil out their little "reports". Trust me, the rest of the WORLD already sees Quebec's language issues an embarrassment, STANDING UP TO THEM WILL FORCE THE OQLF TO CLOSE ITS DOORS!

    There would seem to be a lesson to be learned from this for all business owners. Public shaming of the pettiness of the language cops. Too bad we cannot put these language zealot in the stocks.

    These incidents over the past few days are a clear cut message to the non-Francophone communities.

    If you are going to open up a business, open one up in the rest of Canada, not Quebec. In the rest of Canada you will have no oppressive language laws, less socialism ideology that if you make money you are a bad person, less taxes to pay and less government interference.

    If more and more people did this including many of the big chains than more Quebecois will be out of work, but have less welfare to depend on because the businesses and the tax dollars generated by them and their employees will also be gone.

    Then and only then might the raciest attitudes of the Quebecois start to change and the fanciest parties of the PQ, Solidair and Bloque might get less support.
