No deps within WalMart

Walmart has lost its bid to get permission to open convenience stores within some of its big box outlets.

The chain had applied for permits for depanneurs in two stores, one in Mascouche and the other just off Highway 13 in Laval.  The plan was to operate the convenience stores in separate areas, away from the general merchandise.

However, the permits have been refused, after grocery stores complained that the deps appeared to be a back door way to get permission to sell beer and wine.  They argued that Walmart would set a dangerous precedent for other stores not specializing in groceries, raising the spectre of wine being sold at a dollar store or six packs of beer on offer at hardware outlets.

Some of the wine in Quebec should be on sale at the dollar store.
