Loto-Quebec's Oscar experiment a success

Betting on this Sunday's Oscars appears to have been a hit for Loto-Quebec.

Last month, the provincial gaming agency decided to test how well a non-sporting event would work on its popular Mise-O-Jeu sports betting game, and Jean-Pierre Roy with Loto-Quebec says it took in about $58,000 worth of bets on seven Oscar categories, with nearly half of those bets having been placed on Sunday, the day of the awards show.

It's not much, but Roy says it exceeded expectations. So much so, that they may try opening the game to other awards shows, or other events, in the future.

"It's not a huge market," Roy says of arts-related and awards show betting. "but there might be a niche, a small market for it, so that's why we'll investigate the thing a little more.

Loto Quebec should experiment with a "student" lottery that is year round, proceeds of which go to help fund students who need $ -not universal, but for that need it! Education funding problem solved, progressively! ~ Ian
