Ottawa mayor warned against "TomaHawks"

The mayor of Ottawa says he tried to warn the owners of the new pro basketball team away from the name TomaHawks.

The name was unveiled with much fanfare this week and was scrapped just a few hours later after complaints that it was disrespectful to Canada's First Nations.  The team shut down its Twitter account and promised that it would come up with a new name soon.

Ottawa mayor Jim Watson says he had urged team management to do some public consultations before announcing the name.

The team says it did consult First Nations leaders but Ojibwe activist Ian Campeau says the choice of TomaHawks was unbelievable.
