Posties complain about new shifts

Posties are complaining about the new work arrangement they've been living with since a job reorganization at Canada Post began last summer.

They are now expected to deliver both letters and packages, and pick up from street boxes on routes that have been lengthened.  Plus, they're expected to finish their routes even if they have to put on headlamps and complete their rounds in the dark.

La Presse reports that some carriers resent having to produce a doctor's note to get out of the overtime that has become de rigueur. Their union says burn-out and absenteeism has taken a huge jump.

Wow its a hard life. "They are now expected to deliver both letters and packages" so this is a new job requirement? Wow, silly me for thinking that was their job in the first place. Wish I could go home before dark in the winter.

These days, there is vicious competition for a dwindling number of jobs. Crappy hours are the new norm.

The Posties have decent salaries, benefits and a pension. Who has an employee pension these days? Do Posties have to get a university graduate degree to do what they do and end up with big student debt? Hell no!

They should be thankful that they have jobs. (As an added bonus, their job is physical, giving them lots of exercise which contributes to being healthy.)

I feel for them, they are always belly aching about something. Now they have to work for a living.....welcome to the club. They get away with so much. One day our company was closed, the mail lady left the box of mail in the rain over the weekend. She left all the letters, company cheques etc.... sitting in the rain. She didn't understand why the owner of the company was upset..... The box had rain in it and every letter was sopping wet. Thanks for the great service Canada Post.

To start with I'm not a postal worker and no one in my family works for Canada Post. There was a time when our mail was delivered by people that carried a heavy bag of mail in all kinds of conditions. Today not so much. Yet, seeing a mail deliver person delivering mail at 7:00 at night just doesn't seem right. These people have been attacked by dogs, fallen down stairs covered in ice, mugged by people trying to steal their mail or keys and working in weather conditions that most of us would never work in. Also mail delivery people do things that they are not paid for to this day. Not all of them but a good number of them take it upon themselves to knock or ring the doorbells of their older customers just to see if they are ok. Plus, for some of these people this the highlight of their week. Letter carriers, bank tellers, grocery check out clerks and bus drivers are the forgotten front line workers that we take for granted. These are the same people that we yell at because were having a bad day or we don't like the service. Just remember these people don't own the company they work for. They work with the public! And if you have ever worked with the public you know how caring and understanding we can be. Having said what I have said the postal service around the world is dying a slow death. In (20) years there will be no mail delivery. I don't know about you but there is something special about receiving a letter in the mail that's not a bill. So, the next time you meet your mail delivery person just take a moment and say hello and thanks because you never miss something till it's gone.
