Canadian drowns in Cuba

Foreign Affairs confirms that a Canadian drowned at a beach in Cuba this week but is not confirming a report that the man is a Montrealer.

The report says he ran into trouble while swimming in heavy surf off a beach in Varadaro. An eyewitness says lifeguards and passersby tried to help him but were driven back by the waves.

The report says one Good Samaritan who tried to rescue him also perished.

@Wayne Wayne...if your son is there when this happened, the consular is used to fielding calls from concerned family or friends who have someone, or know someone, who's there at the same time the event occurred...I'm sure they'd oblige if you placed a call to the Canadian Consulate in Cuba & inquired....the least they can do is give you a city of residence or something, I presume. I'm a bit freaked out myself as a former classmate I know just went there yesterday; Varadero Beach was his destination...he's a retired (in 2012) Canadian airforce fighter pilot...he's done water rescues ...there's been no activity on his facebook in 20-23 hours but that's to be expected considering he just left on vacation. At first I didn't think it was him, cause news shows the victim as a Montrealer, then other stories say the city of residence isn't confirmed...so this conflicting info leaves things up in the air & I'm still anxious...
