City partly blamed in firefighter death

The Montreal Fire Department has been singled out for some of the blame in the accidential death of a firefighter last July.

Firefighter Thierry Godfrind died under the wheels of a pumper truck as the vehicle was backing up at the scene of a fire on Dutrisac street in Saint-Laurent, last July 13.
While the vehicle's back-up signal was working, and the firefighter should normally have heard it, the CSST says the back-up signal alone is not enough to ensure the safety of any worker.

A fine is being levied, but because the city plans to appeal, the CSST will not reveal the precisde amount of the fine. However, it could vary between 15,400 and 154-thousand dollars.

The Montreal Fire Department has indicated it has already addressed the issues raised by the CSST.
