Student demo costly for some protesters

Montreal police say they rounded up a total of 72 people during last night's student protest in favor of free education.

Several thousand people took part in the demo, which saw clashes with police, and windows shattered along the route.

There were 10 people arrested on various charges. They've been released on a promise to appear in court.

The rest were rounded up at the corner of Ste-Catherine and Amherst Sts., at the end of the demo, and were each given $637 tickets for taking part in an illegal demonstration.

A total of three people — two officers and a demonstrator — suffered minor injuries as a result of the protest.

This was a kettle/mass arrest, a controversial tactic that gets everyone, including people on the sidewalks, who happen to be there. This happened. They got more than the people marching in the streets. By the way, it was not at the corner of Amherst and Ste-Catherine, it was on Ste-Catherine between Montcalm and Beaudry, a block where there are no alleys at all on either side of the street, making egress impossible when the riot forces stormed down Beaudry from de Maisonneuve and rushed into Ste-Catherine.
