New photo radar units to hit the road

Posted By: Andrew Peplowski · 3/8/2013 5:41:00 AM

The days of motorists slowing down as they approach photo radar units , and then speeding up once they are past may be numbered.

The Transport Ministry has put out a call for tenders for 37 more photo radar units, including nine on wheels that can be moved around and placed in different locations.

The tender documents, obtained by The Journal de Montreal, calls for the units to be stand alone, to be theft and vandalism resistant and to be able to operate for several days on battery power.

The other 28 photo radar units in the would be the standard fixed and mobile units mounted in vans.

The new units will be distributed across Quebec including Montreal, Laval, and the South Shore.

It's about time we get more photo radar units in place, too many people are still speeding at ridiculous speeds on the highways, only to avoid being caught because they know where the speed cameras are located.. (Then they probably complain about gas prices when they ride their cars at guzzling speeds). If anybody mentions cash grab, don't even go there, we need to grab as much cash as possible from these wreckless idiots. Don't want to pay the cash - drive properly or stay off the streets!

@Anthony You must be one those guys who drives 90 on the passing lane. You're causing traffic which ends up in accidents. This is a waste of tax dollars for no reason. We have one of the lowest speed limits in the world it's actually depressing. If you think 120km/h is "too fast" you don't belong in a car and should take the bus. Also most new engines require 91 Octane which is way more expensive then the advertised prices so get your facts straight "Anthony" and stop being a baby.

Finally ! Glad to hear that there will be more photo radars. Something needs to be done to slow down drivers and this is a great start. An excellent source of income for the province also funded by those breaking the law.

    Don't want a ticket? Don't speed.

Easy funding for the new "won't be over-budget" Champlain bridge! Lol. Start placing these all over highway 40, 15, and 20. Move them around every 2 days...cha-Ching! Finally something I'll support from this clown government.

So more money for the gov, now let's see something coming back to the people because I'm tired of crappy roads and 24 hour waiting at the emergency room. I would cheer them on if the money would go for good use, not to support something stupid like more OQLF inspectors.

This is simply a waste of time and money. We have police officers that simply do that and they are happy doing that. Those thinking that the cities will reduce the amount of police officers or have them doing other things live on another planet. It's not going to do anything for safety because the speeders will continue to speed because there are not 150,000 cameras in place and the accidents will continue to happen, not because of speed, but because of people who can't handle their speed. To increase safety, everyone at the age of 70+ should do a driving test EVERY YEAR, including highway. The government uses the act of driving a car as a tax on the population that owns a car and less so on the thoughtful idea of privilege and safety.
