Last ditch effort to preserve Eric Sharp arena

Posted By: Andrew Peplowski · 3/8/2013 7:14:00 AM

Mayor Philippe Brunet says it's too late but opponents of a plan to tear down the Eric Sharp arena in Saint-Lambert  are still  hoping to have the building renovated rather than rebuilt.

Demolition is set for next month and the plan is to build  a more modern $10.8 million dollar facility.

The Quebec government will contribute $4.4 million.

But a local group  backed by the Quebec Order of Architects and Heritage Montreal says the arena with it`s wooden beams and a cedar ceiling are classic examples of 1960`s architecture and should be preserved.

About a thousand people have signed a petition against the project, and opposition leaders will meet with local PQ MNA Marie Malavoy to explain their position in the hope of getting the Marois government on side.

Many thanks to all who are making the effort to preserve this building. My father, John William Cooke, was the architect who designed the arena and I am sure he would be quite moved by your recognition and appreciation of the beauty of this building. I was born in Saint Lambert but unfortunately moved away when I was quite young so I have never had the chance to skate in the arena. I am looking forward to the opportunity to visit in the coming weeks, with hopes that the bid to renovate the building will come to fruition. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Quebec Order of Architects and Heritage Montreal in the backing of this cause.
