Labeaume blasts "mean" bill 14

Posted By: Angelica Montgomery · 3/11/2013 4:12:00 PM

Quebec city's mayor Regis Labeaume is launching a scathing attack against a section of the PQ's language bill.

"They're going to laugh at us," says Labeaume, adding that the section of the bill that will  ban Francophone military families from attending English school will taint Quebec's image.

He would not comment on the other parts of the bill.

But, he says it is "completely useless" to change the law for the mere 700 students who benefit from the exception. Labeaume also says bill 14 would mean attendance in the English Central Quebec School Board would drop by 20 percent.

"The Anglophone community, we should defend them like anybody else in Quebec," says Labeaume.

He says Quebec city Anglophones help the city "I think the least we can do is to try to help them too."

@CDU Loads of Francophones are saying we need protection. Pick up a French paper, and you'll see all sorts of criticism of the stupidity.

@CDU He lives in a city 96% french and does not know Montréal where we sometimes cannot even be served in french where others give you an attitude if you can't answer them in english.

If Mayor Labeaume can do this, what is stopping the mayor of Montreal from speaking out against provincial policies (from both sovereignist and federalist governments) that are short-sighted and create divisiveness that harm social cohesion and hinder economic development? That is the type of leadership we must all demand from the next candidates for mayor in Montreal

Comming from Québec city and its tiny english minority I understand his point of vue.

The problem is that in Montréal they became so arrogant that they think they actually think the city belongs to them (partition, etc.)

and are pushing for official bilingualism as a prelude to imposing their lingua franca once everybody can serve them in english.

Because why should people learn french in Montréal if you can live entirely in english ?

French Quebekers are not dupe and know what's really going on...

@Le Québécois Le Quebecois: How are Anglos arrogant??? That was 40 years ago bud.

It should be considered that Montreal was mainly built by the Scottish, English, Irish, Jews, Italians, Greeks, Armenians, & obviously some others.

French Quebeckers don't really CARE about all of this - that's what you fail to see. Most like to speak English to their Anglo friends, and Anglos like speaking French to their Franco friends. This is all so petty. No one should stop anyone from speaking anything. It makes for a much better society & economy.

Maybe the Quebecers who are so worried about this should find real things to worry about - like the REAL problems we face in this province. Language should be the least of their worries.

@Le Québécois The problem is the Angry-Anglo exists in an artificial environment of his own making . Surrounded only by other Anglo's , completely cut off from any French media or culture , he becomes convinced the vast majority , and any reasonable thinking person at that , is deeply sympathetic to his whining .
Isolated amongst his kindred spirits he becomes delusional , losing touch ,he is a minority even within his own ageing . shrinking demographic that has for the most part moved beyond this petty language bickering .

More embarassmet on the multiple social media sights will go far. Bravo Mr. Labeaume for speaking your mind . We need morelike you. This idiots are the minority and this was proven with the outcomeof the last election. It is time the majority runs this province nothe other way around .Are you listening Mr. Legault? Waitin for your useless comment Umaga aka LeQuebecois.

@J.S. "Waitin for your useless comment Umaga aka LeQuebecois. "

Well... you asked for it ! :)

Pray LaBeaume cannot read english media too well because seeing all the hatred of everything québécois and open bashing not always veiled in politeness he will surely change his mind ! :)

Legault is listening pretty well, I'm sure his phone rigns all the time with the stupid "CAQ-ATTACK" desperate initiative.

Unfortunately, knowing that only about 5% of the english community will actually consider voting for him he would be a fool to even listen !

You are captive voters and the liberals are not even bothering to listen to half of what you say so don't expect much.

What a great message Bill 14 sends to the families of the military - Go lay your life on the line for Quebec while we destroy your family back home. At least in Regis Labeaume someone finally has the cahoonas to stand up and say something against this Bill. I give him more credence than the politicians who claim to be working in the interest of all Quebecor's.

@LMAO "while we destroy your family back home"
Wow I see you have a good (and demagogical) opinion towards the learning of french (while also learning english if you want), still one of Canada's official language.

We're so lucky to have you in Québec.

It's attitudes like that that make french people fear you and wish you were in another province where you would be happy with your english friends unburdened by such atrocities as having to learn our "miserable" culture.

    HOORAY!!!
The first and only french public figure with enough brains and courage to speak his mind about the negative implications of these racist laws. Celine and Guy take note.
Quebec has terminal cancer and only the elite french have the cure. But do they have the guts? No!

It is wonderful to know that French Quebecers like Mayor Regis Labeaume exist and who obviously possess far more common sense and intelligence than the PQ idiots that are in the process of running Quebec even further into the ground.

Quebec and Canada need you and more people like yourself to take a stand against the ignorance that is running rampant within the PQ party. It is hard for someone like myself to understand how these fools get into power in the first place other than they rely on the stupidity of voters.

It is time that common sense takes a harsh stance against the outrageous and completely unconstitutional ideas that the PQ government are trying to impose. Don't stop Mayor Regis Labeaume. You have the support of far more people that the PQ will ever have.

@Brian Kitts All this happening in Quebec right now is the result of low voter turnout. Next time 'GET OUT AND VOTE!'

@Brian Kitts "who obviously possess far more common sense and intelligence than the PQ idiots"
He simply did not receive rocks in the face or got insults from english people in Montréal in the 50s. :)

People in Québec city do not have the same understanding of the situation.

I'm surprised that English speaking people do not see the reason behind Bill 14 , it is so easy, what they want is to send every person who votes against Quebec separation out of Quebec and then perform their so called ref random. This is planned very wisely and if it passes it will be the end of Quebec as a province of Canada. They use hate and fear as a diversion to the reality of their plan. In my opinion Liberal party of Quebec is responsible for this mess with their incompetence and greed. After all PQ has always said the only thing they want is separation and Liberal party presented the chance to them on a platter!
    1. Le Québécois posted on 03/14/2013 10:12 PM
@Ozhen In the same way so that means all the angryphones are not really defending their "rights" but just fighting against the "decanadianization" (i.e. the grip Canada has over Québec).

Why is it the translation of -common sense- to a separatist = traitor!
