Kindergarten for 4-year olds to start

The PQ will offer kindergarten for 4-year olds this fall to 1, 200 children.

The PQ government hopes to target disadvantage children, but the initial roll-out will not be offered to all of them.

Each qualifying schoolboard, will have to pick one school for a single 18-child class, and that includes every English schoolboard.

Minister Marie Malavoy says 27 % of children do not go to daycare before starting school, and she says many of them start their schooling at a disadvantage.

"I think its a good idea to add a new service to reach more of those children," she says, adding that some parents choose to care for their children at home, but are willing to send them to school.

Malavoy says the program should eventually involve 8 thousand young children.

27% of the Quebec children's parents prefer to look after their children at home from birth to school and this is considered a disadvantage hmm. It's time our kids had a real childhood instead of being processed earlier for future use. Why bother to have parents at all when the state can look after them - might as well have them handed over at birth. Maybe though this is just a way around the promise of more daycare spaces.
