Couillard wins Quebec Liberal leadership

The Quebec Liberal party has a new leader, former cabinet minister Philippe Couillard.

Couillard won a landslide first-ballot victory with 58.5 per cent at the party's leadership convention in Montreal today.

The surprise second-place finisher, former cabinet minister Pierre Moreau, ended up better than expected and has become a more powerful figure in the party.

The last-place finisher, Raymond Bachand, was the finance minister who was the architect of tuition hikes that sparked angry
confrontational protests in the months before the Liberals were knocked out of power last year.

Couillard, 55, was health minister between 2003 and 2008.

    Mr. Couillard, although I have no one else to vote for, please please please don't take my vote for granted. The sooner we have a chance to vote in the next Quebec election, the better.

      @CDU If there was an election right now the liberals would be a minority government so they would have to take advice from the PQ just like the PQ is doing with the opposition right now.

      He will be happy to take your vote for granted because unlike separatist hardliners with option naitonale, you do not have the equality party to vote for.

    I do agree with al, do not take our votes for granted. Alot of Quebecers have their hope on you, Mr. Couillard, restore the healthcare system, restore some anglo rihgts and above all get rid of that marois woman and her separatists,

    Nothing could possibly be worse than what's in there now ... they're like mice in cages, scrambing around without a clue! Can you imagine if they would have had a majority? They do knw the cha-cha-cha very well though.
