Red Square march ends with arrests

Police presence was heavy from the get go.

Student protesters began gathering at Berri Square at around 8 p.m. where they were met by dozens of police, who warned them not to march in the streets for safety reasons.

At around 8:45, about 100 protesters entered Berri station, where they jumped on a metro and rode north to Mont Royal. Once there, they marched up Mount Royal Avenue, defying police orders.

Police weren't far behind, as dozens of squad cars raced up St-Denis to meet them.

Once the protesters turned south onto St-Laurent and marched in the street against traffic, police moved in.

Clad in riot gear, officers kettled about 50 people just north of Rachel, ticketing and detaining them.

No property was damaged during the demonstration.

Police can never get it right.
Always too little or too much...
