No security breach: Montreal police

Montreal police are confirming their computer system was not hacked, and that no sensitive information has been leaked about police officers on the web.

Ian Lafrenière with Montreal police says the information including a list of officers and their badge numbers, office phone numbers, and photos of undercover officers, has been in the public domain for weeks.

But they have opened an investigation, because the information was packaged in such a way that police believe is an attempt to intimidate police officers.

"This is the kind of information that is public," Lafrenière says. "But putting that together is to intimidate police officers. This is why we're doing an investigation."

A link to the files had been publicized on Facebook and Twitter, and drove people to the online file storage site Dropbox.

"When we talk about the safety of our police officers we take that very seriously," Lafrenière adds, "and that's why we are conducting a complete investigation."
