Quebecers shunning eco-friendly cars

Protegez-Vous and the Automobile Protection Association today released the 25th edition of its AUTOS guide which outlines more than 300 new and used car models.

But while people say they want a fuel-efficient vehicle, it seems buying trends are telling the opposite.

George Iny, director of the APA, says what people say in surveys and what they're actually doing is very different. While the environment is usually in the top three or four concerns when people are asked before buying a car, their actions speak differently.

"But in practice the market with the biggest growth are medium-sized SUV's and luxury cars," he says.

He says hybrids and electric vehicles are doing rather poorly in the market because people are simply not prepared to make that step.

"It's odd because we'll shop for different gas stations to save on gas, but we won't necessarily change our purchasing decisions."

But for those looking for a small, compact car your best options he says are the Honda Civic, Hyundai Accent, and the KIA Rio.

AUTOS 2013 goes on sale tomorrow.

I strongly dislike diesel, hybrid and tiny eco boxes, people who see cars as more than simply transportation usually agree [ cant call yourself a car enthusiast and drive a diesel].

Why would anyone want an overpriced eco-friendly car when you could drop far less coin for raw American horsepower.
