Via Rail says passenger train service is being interrupted on its busy route between Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto after a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed southwest of Ottawa.

Via says 10 of its trains are affected by the derailment and it is using buses to transport passengers for at least part of their trip.

Delays in both directions along the route were expected to continue through Wednesday.

Direct Montreal-Toronto not affected

However, Via says passengers travelling on direct routes between Montreal and Toronto that do not go through Ottawa are not affected.

The Transportation Safety Board says investigators are deployed at the site where five CP freight cars derailed Wednesday afternoon at Smiths Falls. No injuries are reported.

The TSB says one of the cars is carrying dangerous goods but there's been no leak and there is no danger to the public.
