A four year old girl has died following a fire in Montreal North this morning.

It began in a basement apartment of a three story building on Matte near Pascal at around 6:30am.

A fire department spokesman says they were able to evacuate six people from a basement apartment but the girl was badly burned and in cardiac arrest.

She was declared dead at hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
