Manif-a-versary: another student demo tonight

Posted By: Laura Casella · 3/22/2013 12:34:00 PM

One year ago today, with some estimate as high as 200,000 people, took to the streets of Montreal to protest the Liberals' plan to hike tuition fees.

Tonight, students will return to the streets and denounce the Marois government's plan to hike fees to the rate of inflation.

It all kicks off at Emilie-Gamelin Park at 6 o'clock this evening.

Meanwhile, businesses in the area of the park say they are gearing up, and are also fed up.

Louis Provencher, manager at the Ernest clothing store across the street from Emilie-Gamelin park, says they're ready for yet another protest and the possibility of vandalism.

"We have a huge barrier we can bring down in the front to make sure that no one is going to come and damage our business," he says.

The manager at an electronics store on the same strip, who wished to remain anonymous, says they're also taking precautions.

"We never leave an employee alone in the store," he says, "we make sure to be at least three, and tonight we will be five."

The managers agree that they are tired of the continuing demonstrations and hope that a solution is found quickly.

Now that the weather's nice all the losers come out to protest. Last year I would often see them downtown, students with their red patch, holding a Starbucks coffee in one hand & blackberry on the other. Yes, life is so hard for these people.
Hopefully police will end it quickly as they have done lately with protesters.

If my memory serves me right wasn't Marois marching with a red square on her jacket that day I wonder if she will march this evening
Now it is the Liberal Party turn to march with the red square attached to their jackets along with the CAQ and Québec solidaire with Amir Khadir leading the pack
