New street drug 40 times worse than heroin: cops

Posted By: Richard Deschamps · 5/13/2013 11:17:00 AM

Montreal police and public health officials are warning of a new synthetic street drug that's said to be 80 times stronger than morphine, and 40 times more powerful than heroin.

Police issued the warning during a news conference this morning announcing details of a recent raid on a secret east-end drug lab that produced a drug called fentanyl.

Some 300,000 pills of the drug were found during the April 24 raid. The chemical powder at the lab was so powerful that four police officers were overcome by the fumes and were hospitalized.

Two men were arrested, and are still behind bars.

Police say the suspects were preparing to ship thousands of pills to the United States. The remainder of the pills were sold in Montreal, generally over the Internet, and generally to youths.

Research says : "Fentanyl is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine,[9] with 100 micrograms of fentanyl approximately equivalent to 10 mg of morphine "

Who the hell comes up with this stuff? If its so powerful one shot I'm assuming and your addicted, imagine if this is given freely to children just to get them hooked, what chance would they have? The police need to stop this now before its an epidemic, sold over the Internet....omg .

@Me Fentanyl was first created in the 1960's and has been used within the medical industry since then. Contrary to what you just said, you are not "instantly addicted".

@Me I'm sorry but your comment is one of this silliest most uninformed things I have ever read.

Just because it's "40 times stronger" than heroin doesn't mean it's 40 times as addictive. It's a short acting opiod analgesic, most often used in out-patient surgeries. I've had it prior to lumbar epidural injections for spinal pain, and never felt any addiction to it. Hydrocodone or oxycodone are much worse in that respect. But I've had no problem tapering off usage of those when used after surgery.

Also, if something is "40 times stronger" that means very little in terms of actual usage. If it's stronger, you don't use as much. Some people knock back a 6-pack of beers watching a game, but they wouldn't knock back an equal volume of vodka. Higher potency generally means you use less of it. The dangerous part of it is, higher potency means it's probably easier to overdose.

FYI, this stuff has been around for awhile. It's prescription. My grandmother was given it while she was dying of cancer in the form of a patch. She could have been given pot, but nope. Big pharma's gotta invent the good stuff.

40 times more powerful than heroin. I can't wait to see what the street drugs will be likewhen I have kids. We think the stuff that's going around now is bad...

Fentanyl is a drug used by hospitals as anesthesia in operating rooms or for pain management control. In a lollipop form, it's often given to wounded soldiers as they are transported back to a forward hospital.
