Fewer tickets issued for "excessive speeding"
Stiffer penalties, strict enforcement and more public awareness of the dangers has resulted in fewer motorists being pulled over for excessive speeding.
Last year the Sûreté du Québec handed out just under seven thousand excessive speeding tickets.
That compares to more than 11,000 in 2008 when higher fines and licence suspensions were introduced.
Excessive speeding is described as exceeding the speed limit by 40km/h in a zone of 60 or less, by 50 km/h in a zone of more than 60km/h but not more than 90km/h, and by 60km/h in a zone of 100km/h or more.
