Varennes councillor ordered held on impaired driving charge
A town councillor in south shore Varennes is living behind bars this week after his arrest on a drunk driving charge Sunday.
With two previous convictions for being impaired behind the wheel, the judge ruled this week that Joel Beauchemin will be held in custody pending his trial.
Beauchemin was picked up by police on Boulevard de la Marine after he apparently lost control of his car , crossed the road a hit a car parked on the other side so hard that his car ended up on it's roof.
The mayor of Varennes, Martin Damphousse, has asked for Beauchemin's resignation.
