Sinkhole to be fixed by early next week: city
The city's point man on infrastructure says work to fix that giant sinkhole on Ste. Catherine St., and the water and sewage pipes underneath it, is going well, and that the street will finally reopen to traffic early next week.
But Richard Deschamps won't say exactly when.
The stretch of Ste. Catherine St. between Guy and St. Mathieu has been closed since Aug. 5, when a hole suddenly opened up and swallowed a giant backhoe.
Deschamps says workers have been putting in 16-hour days fixing the hole, but he says the underground repair work has been more complex, and thus longer than expected.
A 50-foot sewer pipe, for instance, had to be completely rebuilt, and water pipes also needed extensive repairs.
