E-alerts for NDG/CDN
The NDG-Cote-des-Neiges borough took another step forward into the 21st Century with this afternoon's launch of a digital messaging tool designed to keep its residents up to date on the goings-on in their neighbourhood.
Called Citizen Alert, it is available both through the borough's website and on smartphones.
It can send subscribers brief messages ranging from boil water alerts to public events.
Borough mayor Lionel Perez said he's long wanted to use technology to improve communications between his office and his constituents, and thinks the Citizen Alert will be a big help in that regard.
Perez ordered the project shortly after he took office last November.
It took on added urgency with the big snowstorm that walloped Montreal just after Christmas, as well as the city-wide boil water advisory in May.
He thinks the platform has potential far beyond his own borough.
"We did it on our own because we wanted to do it," he said. "We believe it's going to be a huge success and following that, we're going to get a lot of interest from other boroughs."
He noted that, at a cost of only $20,000 to develop, the alert system was a bargain.
