Family sues hospital for throwing out donated kidney
An Ohio hospital that accidentally threw away the kidney of a healthy donor instead of transplanting it to the donor's sister is being sued by the family.
Sarah Fudacz, 24, had to go back to dialysis after the unbelievable situation.
"They threw away my life. They threw away something that means so much to me," Fudacz said.
The University of Toledo Medical Center has admitted throwing the kidney away, but is not admitting to substandard medical care.
Sarah's younger brother Paul donated the kidney. It was thrown out on the day Sarah was to have her surgery.
A report suggests the mistake happened when two nurses alternated shifts for a lunch break. When one of the nurses returned from lunch, the other didn't properly inform her about what stage the surgery was in, and the kidney was thrown out along with other medical waste.
The kidney was eventually recovered from the trash, but was unusable.
One of the nurses involved resigned her position following the incident; the other was fired, and is suing for wrongful dismissal.
