Piano destroyed in NDG park
Just one week before a public piano in NDG was to be unveiled as part of the City of Montreal's Piano in the Park initiative, it's been trashed.
The piano in Notre-Dame-De-Grace Park on Girard Street is covered by a tarp but you can see that it's been covered in graffiti and lit on fire.
Gilles, who sleeps in the park, says a group of kids lit the piano on fire on Tuesday night and that these same people often drink and do drugs in the park.
Another resident who walks her dog in the area says vandalism is a problem in NDG.
"There's quite a bit of vandalism around here, there's the graffiti, some people say it’s art but I don't think the tagging is art, I think it’s vandalism and that this action was an extension of that, I'm not saying graffiti artists did this, but there is disrespect for property."
Gilles says he's seen police patrolling the park more frequently since the incident occurred.
There are four other public pianos in Plateau-Mont-Royal, as part of this initiative, and they have not been vandalized.
At around the same time last year, a war memorial in Notre-Dame-De-Grace Park was also hit by vandals.
