Quebec Muslim group upset with Facebook hate messages
A local Muslim and Arab group is crying foul after its Facebook page has been flooded with hateful comments — all of this, since PQ minister Bernard Drainville unveiled the specifics of his government's much-talked about Charter of Quebec Values.
Among the messages that have popped up on l'Association des Musulmans et des Arabes pour la Laïcité au Québec's page, "conform or leave", "look what's happening in Europe, and you'll understand we're better off being protected from these rodents," and "stop complaining and do like everyone else."
Other messages have referred to Muslims as woman-beaters, pedophiles, and people who will never become Québécois.
The words hurt, according to Haroun Bouazzi, a spokesperson for the group L’Association des Musulmans des Arabes pour la Laïcité au Québec.
"These extreme features can actually show up in our society because of the perception of what the government in saying," Bouazzi says.
He says he understands the hate messages are only from a minority, but holds out thanks to an outpouring of support.
