Place Des Arts turns the big 5-0
A well-known concert venue in Montreal was officially inaugurated 50 years ago Saturday.
Place Des Arts, which took two years to build, officially opened on September 21st, 1963.
More than three-thousand people attended the inauguration, including mayor Jean Drapeau and premier Jean Lesage.
The event included a performance by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
The main theater was named for Wilfrid Pelletier, the OSM's first director.
Salle Wilfred Pelletier has housed countless concerts over the years, from Dionne Warwick to Paul Anka as well as Just for Laughs Galas and Montreal Jazz Festival shows.
Even graduation ceremonies have been held there.
Just a month before PDA's opening, ground had been broken for Expo 67.
