Suppliers make "donations" to hospitals
The province says there are no rules to stop companies wanting to supply products to hospitals from making donations to those institutions.
La Presse reports that this has become common practice: companies seeking contracts to supply everything from gloves and gauze to surgical instruments cut the hospital a cheque of between one and four percent of the value of the contract. Sometimes the money is given directly to the hospital, sometimes to the hospital's fundraising foundation.
The Coalition Avenir Quebec is denouncing the practice, saying it impedes competition because it favours big companies over small ones.
