Alleged Via terror plotters to go directly to trial
Federal prosecutors are bypassing a preliminary hearing for two men charged in an alleged plot to attack a Via Rail train.
The Crown announced in court today that it is proceeding by direct indictment against Raed Jaser and Chiheb Esseghaier.
The two face several terrorism charges each as they are accused of plotting to attack a passenger train between New York and Toronto.
Jaser's lawyer is applying to get his client out on bail, and the bail hearing has been set for Oct. 21.
Both Jaser and Esseghaier will be in Superior Court that day in Toronto so a judicial pretrial, the next stage in the court process, can be set.
Esseghaier still does not have a lawyer, as he insists he wants one who will use the Qur'an as a reference instead of the Criminal Code.
