Former SSJB president slams values charter
The PQ's charter of values has another prominent opponent from the sovereignist camp.
Jean Dorion, former Bloc MP and former head of Montreal's St. Jean Baptiste Society, says he plans on being at Sunday's anti-charter demonstration.
In a book launched this week, the longtime sovereignist criticizes the charter as unnecessarily divisive, dividing not just Quebecers but sovereignist Quebecers, and will keep immigrants from adhering to the sovereignist cause.
"It's a message of exclusion that we are giving with such a project," Dorion says. "I think René Lévesque would be very mad against that. he was never like that."
He adds the Marois government doesn't need a charter to defend the notion of secularism, but could have done that just by modifying a few regulations and laws.
Two weeks ago, he came to the defence of another former Bloc MP, Maria Mourani, who was booted out of caucus for coming out against the charter.
