Marchers denounce proposed Hydro rate hike
400 people showed up at Phillips's Square and marched to the Hydro Quebec building on Rene Levesque Saturday afternoon, protesting what they call the fiscal choices of the Parti Quebecois government. They were especially angry at the request from Hydro to increase rates by, on average 5.8%, to take effect April 2014.
The demonstrators, from more than 85 community organizations, included labour, feminist and student groups. They say the Hydro hike would cost the average low-income household approximately $100 dollars a year. They say this is on top of higher rates for healthcare, and university tuition.
The demonstrators lament the fact that if you add up all the increases, the little guy always has to pay the bill. They are also tired of the austerity measures being proposed by the Parti Quebecois.
Instead of going after low and middle-class earners they say, the Marois government should be raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations.
