Laval mayoralty candidate threatened with broken legs
A Laval mayoralty candidate says someone out there is threatening to break his legs.
Marc Demers of the Mouvement Lavallois was informed of the anonymous threat last night.
Demers is a former police officer who worked with the Laval department's major crimes unit. He has taken part in raids targeting former mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, and has publicly denounced the longtime former mayor in the past.
Vaillancourt, the one-time 'King of Laval', now stands accused of fraud and gansterism charges in connection with his 23-year reign as mayor.
Demers wouldn't speculate about where the threats might have come from. He's due to meet either tonight or tomorrow with agents from the Hammer squad.
"We will see what the matter is, and if it's clear enough, I'll ask for a thorough investigation, and I'll file a complaint," Demers says.
Earlier today, one of Demers' rivals, Claire Le Bel, says she fears for her safety after she agreed to meet with Vaillancourt over the summer to discuss an offer he made to finance her campaign.
She refused the offer, but secretly recorded the conversation.
The tape was made public yesterday, and just hours later, a party staffer was roughed up.
