Judge approves high school sex settlement
A Quebec Superior Court justice has okayed a settlement in a class-action lawsuit against the English Montreal School Board and one of its former teachers who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting eight male students from the 1960s to the early 1980s.
The teacher, Renwick Spence, taught at Montreal West High School — then a part of the EMSB's predecessor, the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal.
Spence was sentenced to 30 months for the assaults in 2007. He was paroled in 2009.
Eligible claimants would split $5 million. The first cheques could go out as early as the beginning of 2014.
