Harel seeks creation of Montreal language watchdog
Not straying far from her PQ roots, Vision Montreal leader Louise Harel is proposing that the new civic administration that will be formed after the election next month create a new position on the Executive Committee.
She wants a dedicated role at city hall for the promotion of the French language.
The Sainte-Marie district, Vison Montreal candidate, running under the Marcel Côté banner, says she is concerned by what she feels are the growing number of English-language store signs in Montreal.
Harel says constant vigilance is needed to keep English in check, and that can only happen at the highest level of power at city hall.
She says the Executive Committee member responsible for language would be asked to promote the use of French within the city and to produce an annual report on the overall language situation in Montreal.
