Orderly suspended for chewing out dying vet
The orderly who's accused of yelling at a terminally ill 77-year-old Canadian navy veteran to speak French at the Gatineau Hospital has been suspended with pay from his job.
The Centre de santé de Gatineau says their ombudsman is investigating the incident and it could take up to 45 days but in the meantime the orderly will stay home.
The family of John Gervais had complained to the hospital after the orderly yelled at the cancer-stricken vet and his family in a full emergency room on October 12, telling them: “They were not in a hotel, that they were in Quebec and needed to speak French."
“We don’t have to worry about Mr. Gervais and his wife running into this orderly again so that brings us a level of comfort but we won’t be satisfied until we know that this man won’t be working with sick people again,” Steve Long, Gervais' son-in-law, told CJAD.
“The hospital should have done this immediately; it's pretty obvious that they’ve only suspended him because of the media attention.”
Long added that they hadn’t heard anything from the Gatineau Hospital and only found out about the suspension in the news.
