More bus lanes, better smartphone apps in STM's plans
A master plan for improving bus service by 2020 is calling for more buses, more bus lanes, and improved smartphone apps to track those buses on their journeys.
The STM's Strategic Plan for 2020 is planning to double the number of reserved bus lanes on Montreal streets.
There are now 190 km of bus lanes along 29 different routes. The plan calls for 370 km of bus lanes along 56 routes.
There would also be another 400 hybrid buses added to the STM's fleet, and improved smartphone apps, which it's hoped would be able to track buses along their routes. The transit company is also planning to increase its presence on social media, to better inform users of things such as metro interruptions of 20 minutes or more.
The ultimate goal is to grow the STM's ridership from 405 million rides in 2011 — a figure which broke a record set in 1947 — to 540 million in seven years.
