The city of Montreal and the province of Quebec are embroiled in a corruption and collusion scandal. Construction bosses and city officials have alleged at the Charbonneau Commission* that officials within the city have taken kickbacks in exhange for inflating contracts and then giving the contracts to the "right" companies.
The scandal reaches into the highest levels of the City of Montreal with allegations that even the mayor knew what was going on, but did nothing to stop it. Heads have rolled. Montreal city officials have been fired and even the mayor of Montreal had to resign, a year before the end of his mandate.
*The Charbonneau Commission is the Commission of Inquiry on the Granting and Management of Public Contracts in the Construction Industry. It is chaired by Quebec Superior Court Justice France Charbonneau.
