About Richard “Big Daddy” Murphy
Richard was not only a father to a son and two step-daughters, he was a BIG DADDY to everyone.  Whether it was a friend, a friends child, a friend of a friend of a friend, he was everyone’s big daddy. Everyone looked up to him, everyone respected him. He was always surrounded by children, he cared so much for everyone’s children. He wanted and needed to see children succeed. I don’t think there is a child who knows him that didn’t hear positive words from him. Every week-end you would see Richard at one of the parks watching children play football. He was always willing to give whatever he could. He was very concerned with contributing to society. Richard always made a point to ask what was going on in their lives and I don’t think you can find anyone who knew Richard that disliked him. He was loved by everyone. He was a very special man.

About Richard “Big Daddy” Murphy Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament
On October 28th, 2007, Richard “Big Daddy” left an ache in each and everyone’s heart who knew him. In January 2010, Madonna (Richard’s wife) and I were standing outside the Royal Canadian Legion in Verdun when I asked her how the golf tournament was going that she wanted to do in Richard’s name. She told me that it didn’t look good and asked how else she could keep his name alive. I mentioned a poker tournament, though I didn’t know how it would turn out. I should have known that anything bearing Richard’s name would be a great success. Everyone loved him.

The first year we had support from about 20 friends and family, last year we doubled that number and this year we will probably double that number again. Everyone is getting involved. His friends and family are more than happy to help.

Though Richard is not with us today, by working on this fundraiser and writing and hearing his name over and over again, it feels like he is not far away. I know that he is looking down on us and smiling and we all know he had a beautiful smile.
