Popp binging on defensive talent

Posted By: Rick Moffat · 2/21/2012 7:02:00 AM

Not content with the 2 biggest defensive free agents on the CFL market, Als' GM Jim Popp believes good things come in 3's for the 2012 extreme makeover.

After getting Aaron Hunt to finally stop tweeting and sign his new deal Monday night, the Als have Mark Restelli ready to move to Montreal.

Restelli, like the first of Popp's trio of signings Rod Davis a former Edmonton Eskimo, spent time with the Miami Dolphins in 2011 but never fully regained his starting job or his impact on the Eskimos defense.

"He's a guy like Mark Megna who works hard and can be active in the box or get after the passer," says Popp of the former Als defensive end who helped the team win the Grey Cup a decade ago.

The Als are retooling a defense that surrendered 52 points in the Eastern Semi-final playoff loss under new defensive coordinator ...

Hunt deal to get done

Posted By: Rick Moffat · 2/20/2012 5:51:00 AM

Aaron Hunt tweets he'd like to "apologize to my new teammates for all the trash talking I've done in the past!"

But before the pillar of a defensive tackle on the Lions' Grey Cup championship team of 2011 puts the twit back in twitter, Jim Popp would prefer to see a signature...on his new deal with the Als.

Hunt has been tweeting throughout the weekend about his impending move and accepting congratulations tweets from his new "teammates".

But the Als still have no deal for the man who will bulk up the defensive line and along with Edmonton's Rod Davis, give Popp the 2 most prized defensive free agents of the CFL signing frenzy.

CFL sources now tell CJAD the deal will surely get done today.

Alouette players including SJ Green, Jamal Richardson, Brandon Whitaker and Brian Bratton have all tweeted hunt to welcome him aboard.

No tweet from GM ...

Als surprise after midnight, land allstar Davis

Posted By: Rick Moffat · 2/16/2012 5:52:00 AM

The Alouettes may appear to have a bigger need on the defensive line, but in the wee hours: GM Jim Popp landed allstar linebacker Rod Davis early this morning after talks dragged beyond the first 12 hours of CFL free agency.

The Als tested the bidding for Lions' defensive tackle Aaron Hunt but found the price for the Grey Cup champ too high.

Instead they opt for a "difference-maker" interior linebacker who can plug into new defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold's 3-4 scheme---a scheme the coaching staff is still devising.

Davis was the quarterback of the Eskimos' defense in 2011.   He had a career high total in tackles and sacks (5).  In 2010 Davis scored 2 touchdowns on his 2 interception returns.   He also brings a nasty presence, having been fined for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Buck Peirce in 2011.

"We've had a tremendous off season of signings of players who ...

Als lose Woldu to free agency

Posted By: Rick Moffat · 2/15/2012 8:48:00 PM

A day after resigning the once reluctant Roughrider Scott Flory to a new 3-year deal, the Als have lost another Prairie gem Paul Woldu to Saskatchewan.

The Regina-born DB has been a steady Als' backup in the secondary.   Woldu often spent his offseasons training with Riders despite having broken Rider hearts in the '09&'10 Grey Cups.

The Als had been talking deal but the trail blew cold over the last week or so.

GM Jim Popp may yet land Walter Spencer, who appears to be in no rush to sign though would be happy to return to Montreal.

With less than 24 hours until the free agent deadline, the Montreal Alouettes announced signing of non-import guard Scott Flory to a new three-year deal.

Flory will be back for his 14th season with the Alouettes in 2012. The 35-year-old CFL veteran was twice named the league's most outstanding lineman and helped the Alouettes win three Grey Cup championships.

The Alouettes also announced the release of import defensive tackle Eric Wilson who recorded 54 defensive tackles in his five seasons with Montreal.

Listen to Flory revealing his off-season weight and other burning issues on the Andrew Carter Morning Show.

Has Jim Popp won the CFL free agent sweepstakes?
Yes, the Als' binge on defensive studs makes them Grey Cup favorites for 2012.
No, you can't buy a championship. The entire division is going to be tougher.
