CJAD's Philion wins Argos coaching job
CJAD's CFL/NFL analyst Ed Philion, a longtime Alouette, is returning to the Canadian Football League fulltime. Philion has accepted a coaching job with the 100th Grey Cup Champion Argos.
The longtime Montreal defensive tackle and 4-time CFL East Allstar is reunited with former Als' defensive coordinator Chris Jones, who signed a new deal with the Argos himself after being considered for the job to replace Marc Trestman as Als' head coach.
Philion, a vocal and sometimes controversial player, joined CJAD in the broadcast both with the late Alouette legend Tony Proudfoot and Rick Moffat in 2007.
As defensive line coach for Toronto in 2013, Philion will try to unleash Argo defenders on Anthony Calvillo and Alouette ballcarriers.
Philion won the Grey Cup with the Als in 2002 and was reunited on the field for a 10th anniversary celebration last season at Molson Stadium (that's Ed on the far right with Okeke, Girard, Lapointe, Woodcock and Heppell from left to right).
The former member of the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars was originally drafted by the Calgary Stampeders (then led by a man with another Montreal connection Wally Buono) in the 1st round of the 1994 draft.
His scrappy battling in the trenches won him a free agent NFL tryout after a US college career at tiny Ferris State in Michigan. Philion played for legendary Buffalo coach Marv Levy (yet another former Alouette of course) before his football travels took him to Europe and a World Bowl title with the Rhein Fire of the NFL-Europe.
Philion was a force in the '02 Grey Cup win for the Als and may best be remembered around the league for his punishing hits on quarterbacks Khari Jones and Damon Allen in heated rivalry games against Winnipeg and Toronto.
Ed is keeping ties in Montreal: he's involved in Quebec's biggest football store http://footbest.ca/ as well as training teen football players through https://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/groups/GameReadyFitnessetEntrainment/?fref=ts
Listen to Ed Philion and Rick Moffat discuss the unique challenge of getting Argos to attack Anthony Calvillo, and Ed's biggest inspiration in the CJAD broadcast booth.
