A great idea from the PQ!
Maybe you saw this story in The Gazette today, a great idea that would save you money.
The Quebec government wants to prevent Members of the National Assembly from crossing the floor to join another party to have two options; if they can no longer say, support being within the PQ, that particular MNA would have the choice of sitting as an independant or there could be a by-election.
But the MNA who forced the by-election would have to pay for it. and as The Gazette points out, the average cost of a by-election in Quebec is $600,000.
This really is a great idea. Think about it. There's an election campaign, politicians are falling over themselves to get your vote, telling you how great their party is, how much you'd benefit from voting for them.
You vote for that candidate, you like his or her policies, and then they decide to switch sides. That is a slap in the face to anyone who voted for that candidate.
Cabinet minister Bernard Drainville told The Gazette it's an act of political integrity, it's a question of respect for voters.
I could not agree more with the minister for Democratic Institutions.
I'm not a big fan of the PQ. But let's give them credit where credit is due. This is a great idea.
