A great idea from the PQ!

Posted By: Barry Morgan · 1/10/2013 6:13:00 PM

Maybe you saw this story in The Gazette today, a great idea that would save you money.

The Quebec government wants to prevent Members of the National Assembly from crossing the floor to join another party to have two options; if they can no longer say, support being within the PQ, that particular MNA would have the choice of sitting as an independant or there could be a by-election.

But the MNA who forced the by-election would have to pay for it. and as The Gazette points out, the average cost of a by-election in Quebec is $600,000.

This really is a great idea. Think about it. There's an election campaign, politicians are falling over themselves to get your vote, telling you how great their party is, how much you'd benefit from voting for them.

You vote for that candidate, you like his or her policies, and then they decide to switch sides. That is a slap in the face to anyone who voted for that candidate.

Cabinet minister Bernard Drainville told The Gazette it's an act of political integrity, it's a question of respect for voters.

I could not agree more with the minister for Democratic Institutions.

I'm not a big fan of the PQ. But let's give them credit where credit is due. This is a great idea.

The party who would benefit the most from that is the PQ so why on earth would you support it especially since you are not a big fan of the PQ?

@Elaine Elaine, do you really believe a Liberal or CAQ MNA would be willing to spend more than half a million dollars to cross the floor?

MNA wants to cross the floor , coz he sees so much corruption and fraud, that he is no longer supporting one party !!

I'm Anglophone and a great fan of the Parti Québécois. Nobody can say they gave us bad government when in power. There's an awful lot of misinformation going around scaring Anglos for which I blame the media. My own mother thought the P.Q. wanted to deport her...

Addressing the penalty for crossing the aisle, I say YES, it is a great idea.

Democracy is starting to slowly fade away. MNAs have to vote the party line no matter what they believe in. Now they have to pay to switch sides if they no longer agree or the party has changed their ideological raison d'être. I have a problem with this.

Hey Barry , Drainville also said in the Gazette article that the electors must have the final word . Hmmm I guess that doesn't apply to neverendum referendums . The no side came out on top twice despite having votes not counted but this gang of morons still insist on eventually having another referendum . Voters should have the last word indeed.

Well Mr. Drainville told the Gazette (it is a matter of respect for voters) . I guess this doesn't apply to referendums . The voters of Quebec have voted twice against seperation but that makes no difference to Pauline who is spending tax dollars to go to Scotland to promote her cause.
