There's a new language rights group in town

Ever since the PQ won a minority government last September, many people have been concerned, for good reason, about the future of this province and its language laws.

You know by now that the PQ intends to strengthen the French Language Charter and several groups have popped up aimed at denouncing the government's intentions.

This evening, I spoke with Richard Yufe of Canadian Rights in Quebec (CRITIQ) and its mission; equality for French and English, freedom to live without fear of separation and a choice for education in English and French.

Mr. Yufe explained how the group intends to achieve its goals.

    I am so grateful that these people are finally fighting back against these language bigots and all the groups are getting together to put a stop to the ongoing harassment of the english and allophone communities by the separatists in this province. We want our rights and freedoms back and to end the instability caused by the never ending debate of being Canadian or not. We are Canadian and want all rights and freedoms we are entitled to under the Canadian Constitution. Thank you all for your work in this endeavour!

      I know it would be so good if Québec was exactly like Ontario or any other canadian provinces !

      ... But it's not so you should get used to it.

      Aside from certain articles, law 101 has passed the supreme courts test so it is "canadian". And I know because some angryphones really really tried !

    Richard I want to thank you for what you are standing up for, most definitely Quebec is a English and French province. People in Montreal and Quebec should be able to deal and speak what ever language they want and businesses should be able to have English signs, not only French. Once again thank you!

      @Dorothy That's a very good idea.

      When you manage to convince Ontario, Alberta, and all other ENGLISH ONLY provinces that they have to work in both languages (not just the federal government) then you call me. :)

    I sincerely hope somewhere or sometime a group of angryphones will succeed in finally invalidating law 101. Far too many Quebekers relied on it like a safety net.

    Then we can finally have a reason to convert soft nationalists to hard sovereinists and have our country once and for all.

    I wish I had a lot of money because I would give it all to your group. :)

      @Le Québécois I only wish more francophones were like you. BTW, Bill 101 WAS struck down by the Supreme Court which is why Kaybec had to use the odious notwithstanding clause. So try to clear that part up.
      I and others will gladly help partition Kaybec once a clear referendum has been asked and answered (presumably with multiple questions), as long as Kaybecers understand that Montreal CAN be divided (think Berlin or Jerusalem) and that ALL military bases will revert to CANADIAN control with Canadian personnel.
      BTW, NB and Ontario DO have laws forcing French on the anglophone community. I just wonder how misinformed you are, but I am glad to correct any misconceptions. NB is now being referred to as Kaybecwick because of the ridiculous French-first laws there as well.
      Anything else you wish to be corrected on?

      @Le Québécois Yes have a country that is ranked is 188th in the world just ahead of tajikistan in quality of life. I am french and most people who want to separate have low level jobs or none at all because they can't speak english to deal with companies outside the province.

    Wonderful idea. However, as a french-as-mother-tongue translator, I checked out the website. In order to have any real credibility, PLEASE get your french language right.

      @Helene I would think that it is not our credibility that you should be concerned about but that of the racist francophones. In fact, I don't see the need to have a French version of this \website AT ALL.

      Québec was founded in 1608 by Champlain. It was "invaded" by the British and "occupied" by them since after a bloody seven year war in which 1/7 of our population was killed in battle or in bloody raids along the way to Montreal. Summary executions, burning of houses, raping of women, etc.

      Aside from some short time in the 19th century where english represented 40% of the population, it has always been very french and is still is today (90% or more).

      Take any basic history book and read it. They are even translated in english if it can help you.

      Btw I think you are right on one point, the british laid so much waste to our beautiful city (they had to send a quarter of the full british navy to take it) that in 1760 a lot of "rebuilding" had to be done because of the british.

      You can say that modern language laws are unfair that is your right but don't tell americans false history facts.

      Sure there are and its part of our diversity. Laws are not against english people but against "anglicisation". Law 101 is not preventing you to put english on all the signs you want, therefore respecting your right to express yourself in your language, it's just that it must be french as well, and the french must be a little bit bigger to announce the fact that this place is one of the last surviving baston of french culture in North America.

      That is, unless angryphones manage to either tear Montreal in pieces or invalidate the only laws that prevent us to be totally culturally wiped out by a continent with 98% anglophone (mostly unilingual) population.

    I guess it's time we "invade" West-Island with french people. I guess its the only way to prevent angryphones from doing partition. :)

    I'm an Anglo. My mom doesn't speak French, only English. I don't understand what the whole whoopla is all about.

    I agree with the French language being the primary language in Québec. Nobody is taking away the rights of Anglos re speaking English. The idea is to ensure that French must be spoken in public areas when the French require a service and is predominant or else it will disappear.

    Tourists come to Québec because of the French they hear. Americans love it. The only problem seems to be with English-only speaking Anglos.

    What's wrong with that?

    It's about time we Quebec Canadians start standing up to those zealots. Has anyone visited Cornwall yet? The francophones there have way more rights than the anglophones. Every single government job requires bilingualism, which in the majority of cases goes to a francophone. I have no problem with this because I believe in a bilingual Canada. However, bilingualism takes many years before it evolves from coast to coast.. Canada is doing its part towards bilingualism but it will never be enough to the separatists.

    It's about time we take matters into our own hands. If this initiative does not stir progress then we should move towards the partition of Quebec and annex ourselves with Ontario or simply stand alone within Canada. It may have to come to this.

    I am so grateful, relieved, hopeful just to mention of few of emotions I'm feeling with this movement.

    I definitely will be there not only to show my support but to be a participant in this protest!

    I am a french canadian originating from New Brunswick. Never in my life, did I ever feel hated by french people as I do here. I just never could figure out why.
