A breathalyzer for every vehicle

This is an idea whose time has come, a breathalyzer for cars and trucks.

I was discussing this recently with Montreal criminal attorney Steven Slimovitch when we were taking a look at the case of a Quebec man facing drunk driving charges for the 17th time!

Slimovitch says he's been talking about this idea for the past 15 years but says there's been a lack of political will to push this forward.

But why should it be such a difficult decision? If motorists had to blow into a breathalyzer before their engine would start, imagine how many potential accidents could be avoided.

Would it be an inconvenience? Maybe. But I'd be much happier having to use a breathalyzer than winding up in a hospital bed or worse.

We have seatbelts, airbags, and other safety equipment in vehicles these days. Photo radar is intended to make roads safer.

As far as Slimovitch is concerned, it's a public safety issue that would benefit everyone. He also says people are ready for it.

You can listen to the reaction from the listeners who called the show.

Some agreed with me, some did not. What about you?

Why don't they just strenthen the consequences of getting caught drinking and driving. Bigger fines, confiscate the vehicle of repeat offenders, or even jail time. Drivers are already burdened with extra cost again! and I willing to bet that the government would find a way to get money out of it.
